Koh Samui, a tropical paradise in Thailand, boasts stunning beaches and resorts, but it's not a haven for dogs and cats. The island was once overrun by stray dogs ('soi' in Thai), facing dire conditions until efforts began in 1999. Before then, lack of veterinary care led to countless animal deaths from treatable injuries and infections.

The dog population spiraled due to frequent litters, leading to drastic government actions like mass poisonings, disrupting tourists and locals alike. The situation worsened as even owned dogs added to the stray population. Poverty and limited access to vets compounded the issue, making interventions like spaying and neutering difficult.

Brigitte & Werner Gomm initiated efforts to aid the dogs, reducing their numbers but inadvertently causing a rise in the cat population. Thus, their work extended to caring for and sterilizing cats across the island.
